Can you replace just the panes in windows without replacing the whole window

Not every problem with a window means the whole thing has to be replaced. A common question is whether you can replace just the pane — for example when a glazing unit has misted up from the inside and gone cloudy. The answer is: yes, but with certain logistical conditions worth knowing before you call. In this article we explain when replacing just the pane makes sense and how it works with us.

Why sealed units mist up

A pane misted up on the inside is a sign that the glazing unit has lost its seal. Between the panes there's a space filled with gas and a desiccant — when the seal fails, moisture gets in and condenses on the glass. The window, frame and hardware themselves may be in perfect condition. In that case there's no need to replace the whole window — you just replace the glazing unit itself.

When we replace just the panes

We replace just the pane mainly on site, alongside other work. If we're at your place anyway for a survey or to fit windows or doors, we're happy to measure the misted panes and give you a good price for them. It's the most cost-effective scenario for both sides.

Why we don't always travel out just for panes

Replacing a glazing unit on its own is a small job. If it meant a special trip of, say, an hour and a half each way just to measure a few panes, the travel bill would exceed the value of the job itself — and the customer would lose out. So we carry out pane-only replacements alongside fitting our windows and doors, or when we're already in the area.

How to report a pane replacement

Best of all, write to us with your location and the number of misted panes. If we have a fitting or survey planned in your area, we'll add the pane replacement to the visit. And if you're already having other windows or doors from us — all the more so, we'll do it at the same time and price it favourably.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just the pane, not the whole window?

Yes. If the frame and hardware are sound and the problem is only the misted unit, we replace just the pane.

Will you come out just to replace panes?

We most often do it alongside a fitting or survey in the area. A special long trip just for panes usually isn't worth it for the customer.

How much does replacing a misted pane cost?

It depends on the size and type of unit. Alongside other work we give a particularly good price for it — just let us know.

Got misted panes? Write in with your location and the number of them — we'll check whether we can combine it with work in your area.
