"How much are six windows?" — this is the question we get most often, and at the same time the hardest to answer without more information. A window's price isn't a single figure from a price list, but the result of a few decisions: size, profile, glazing, colour and the method of installation. This article explains what makes up the final figure, so you understand why two seemingly similar windows can differ in price by several hundred pounds.

Size and number of sashes

The bigger the window and the more opening sashes, the higher the price. A fixed window is cheaper than an opening one of the same dimensions, because it needs no hardware, handle or hinges. A large single-sash window can be cheaper than a smaller double-sash one with more mechanics. So the size alone isn't enough — the construction matters too.

The window profile

The choice of profile system is one of the main price factors. Economy- and premium-class profiles differ in the number of chambers, the build depth and their thermal performance. The Ideal 4000, popular in the UK, is a solid standard, while systems such as the Ideal 7000, 8000 or Salamander offer better insulation at a higher price. The type of glazing

A double-glazed unit is cheaper, a triple-glazed one dearer — but the extra cost for the third pane is surprisingly small today compared with the thermal gain. On top of that come special panes: safety, frosted, acoustic or solar-control. Each such option raises the price, but also genuinely changes how comfortable the window is to live with.

Colour and finish

A white window is the cheapest. Wood-effect colours and anthracite, especially in a two-sided version (colour on both sides of the profile), add to the cost, because they require foiling or through-coloured windows. It's an often-overlooked element that can noticeably change the quote.

A price with installation covers removing the old windows, setting the new ones, sealing and basic finishing. The cost also depends on location — sending a fitting team
