Sliding doors — PSK, Smart Slide and HST demystified

Sliding doors are a great way to get large glazing and a convenient way out onto the patio or into the garden. The trouble is that under the single word "sliding" hide several quite different systems: PSK, Smart Slide and HST. They differ in mechanism, price and purpose. In this article we explain them in plain language, so you know which variant suits your home.

PSK — tilt-and-slide

PSK (Parallel-Schiebe-Kipp), or tilt-and-slide doors, are a solution where the sash first moves slightly forward and then slides parallel along the frame. It can also be tilted for ventilation. It's a good option for medium glazing — convenient and reasonably priced, working well where the largest sizes aren't needed.

Smart Slide — a compromise of comfort and price

Smart Slide is a more modern sliding system, designed with everyday convenience and larger panes of glass in mind than a classic PSK. It combines decent ease of use with an attractive price — a frequently chosen "happy medium" for customers who want striking glazing without moving into the top tier.

HST — lift-and-slide premium

HST (Hebe-Schiebe-Tür), or lift-and-slide doors, are a top-tier solution. The sash lifts on a special mechanism and slides smoothly — even with very large, heavy panes. HST allows the largest glazing, offers excellent weathertightness and warmth, and operation stays light despite the weight of the sash. It's the choice for large projects and modern architecture.

Which system to choose

The choice depends on the size of the glazing, the budget and the comfort you expect. For smaller and medium openings, PSK or Smart Slide works brilliantly. For large, showpiece glazing we recommend HST. We're happy to advise on a specific system once we know the dimensions and your expectations.

Frequently asked questions

How does HST differ from PSK?

HST is a lift-and-slide system for large, heavy panes, with the highest comfort and warmth. PSK is a tilt-and-slide solution for smaller glazing, and cheaper.

Which sliding system is the cheapest?

Usually PSK. Smart Slide is a sensible middle ground, and HST is the premium option for the largest projects.

How do I choose sliding doors for a patio?

Give us the dimensions of the opening and your expectations — we'll match a PSK, Smart Slide or HST and prepare a quote with installation.
